How to check blood pressure?

Sphygmomanometer is the device used to measure blood pressure.

Following steps are followed while calculating the blood pressure:

  • Cuff is wrapped around the patient’s arm
  • The stethoscope is kept over the artery of elbow.
  • Slowly the pressure in the cuff is increased. The reading on the marked scale of the sphygmanometer is noted where the heart beat are first heard and are called as ‘systolic blood pressure’
  • The cuff pressure is then lowered and the point where the heart beat sound ceases is noted. This is the ‘diastolic blood pressure’

If you are above 18 years of age, then you should start monitoring your blood pressure regularly.

How to understand blood pressure reading?

Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and is given as 2 figures:

Systolic Pressure – the pressure when your heart pushes blood out

Diastolic Pressure – the pressure when your heart rests between beats

What should be the frequency of monitoring blood pressure?

Blood pressure should be checked once in every two years. But if it is detected high at some point then three months monitoring is recommended.
